Washington, D.C.

Washington is compact at its core and full of free, world-class sights. Two days covers the great monuments and a couple of the Smithsonian museums comfortably.

Day 1 — The National Mall

Walk the National Mall end to end: the Lincoln Memorial and reflecting pool, the WWII and Vietnam memorials, the Washington Monument, and the U.S. Capitol at one end with a White House view at the other.

Day 2 — Smithsonian museums

The Smithsonian museums — Air and Space, Natural History, American History — are world-class and free; pick two or three rather than rushing all of them. Optional: Arlington National Cemetery, just across the river.

Getting around

  • The Metro is clean and easy; a contactless card or phone works.
  • The Mall is long — comfortable shoes are essential; buses and ride-share fill the gaps.

Worth knowing

Most Smithsonian museums are free, but some popular ones need timed-entry passes — reserve ahead. Spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn are loveliest; summer is hot and humid.

Check before you go. Confirm hours and any timed passes at the official sites (si.edu for the Smithsonian) before you visit.
